Beyond the ordinary
About
Michael Smallman is an artist and writer working with memory, place, and lived experience. His work is shaped by close observation and by an interest in how systems, environments, and events leave lasting marks on individuals.
Painting and writing are used together as parallel forms of inquiry. Rather than illustration or narrative explanation, the work is concerned with atmosphere, residue, and what remains after events have passed. Much of it sits in the space between documentation and interpretation.
The work is informed by personal experience and by time spent reflecting on error, consequence, and survival. These themes are not treated as subjects to be illustrated, but as conditions that quietly influence tone, structure, and choice of focus.
Michael works independently and outside formal institutional frameworks. His practice is slow and deliberate, allowing ideas to emerge through attention and repetition rather than through predefined outcomes.
